Winter Spiti Expedition

Overview
  • Route: Shimla → Sangla/Chitkul → Nako →Tabo → Kaza→ Komic/Hikkim/Langza →Chicham Bridge → Kaza →Kalpa→ Shimla

  • Duration: 7 days/6 Nights 

  • Best Period: Mid-December to Mid-April (full winter, extreme cold)

  • Vehicle Required: 4×4 only (Innova Crysta/Scorpio-N with chains recommended)

  • Altitude Profile: 2,200m (Shimla) → 3,650m(Kaza) → 4,550 m (Komic) → 2,960 m (Kalpa) → 4,150m (Chicham Bridge).

  • Road Condition: 100% tarmac till Kaza (via Reckong Peo–Nako–Sumdo), but frequent ice/snow patches and black ice after Nako

  • Acclimatization: Mandatory night in Kaza before 4,200+ m villages; Diamox prophylaxis optional.

  • Total Distance: ≈ 850–900 km round trip

  • Stay Style: Mostly homestays

  • Highest Altitude: 4,550 m (Komic village)

  • Network: BSNL best; Airtel/Jio patchy

Itinerary

Day 1

Shimla → Sangla/Chitkul (230 km | 3,000 m)
  • Highlights: Baspa Valley, Indo-Tibet border view, snow-covered Chitkul village (last village towards China border)

  • Night stay: Sangla or Chitkul (homestays open in winter)

Day 2

Chitkul/Sangla → Nako (170 km | 3,620 m)
  • Cross check-post at Khab (confluence of Spiti & Satluj rivers)

  • Highlights: Frozen Nako Lake, stunning sunset over Reo Purgyal peak

Day 3

  • Night stay: Nako (few homestays & guesthouses remain open)

Nako → Tabo via Gue & Sumdo (140 km | 3,280 m)
  • Detour: Gue Mummy Monastery (3 km off route, 550+ year old self-mummified monk in glass case)

  • Highlights: 1000-year-old Tabo Monastery (Ajanta of Himalayas), ancient clay statues

Day 4

  • Night stay: Tabo

Tabo → Dhankar → Kaza (55 km | 3,800 m)
  • Dhankar Gompa (3,894 m) – Dramatic cliff monastery, former Spiti capital, glass chapel

  • Dhankar Lake (optional 1 hr moderate trek, 4,140 m)

Day 5

  • Stay: Kaza

Kaza Local Sightseeing (High Altitude Circuit)
  • Langza (4,400 m) – Giant Buddha statue, marine fossil site (Spiti was ocean bed)

  • Hikkim (4,400 m) – World’s highest post office (send postcard home)

  • Komic (4,520 m) – World’s highest village with motorable road, Tangyud Monastery (Sakya sect)

  • Total drive: ≈ 50–60 km round trip from Kaza

  • Return to Kaza

Day 6

  • Stay: Kaza

Kaza → Ki Monastery →Kibber →Chicham (20 km | 4,150m)
  • Ki Monastery (4,116 m) – Largest in Spiti, perched on hilltop, Tangyud view

  • Kibber Village (4,270 m) – Former highest motorable village, wildlife sanctuary entry, Kibber Monastery

  • Optional: Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary walk (spot ibex, blue sheep)

  • Cross Chicham Bridge (Asia’s highest bridge, 2020)

  • Return to Kaza

Day 7

  • Stay: Kaza

Kaza → Kalpa/Reckong Peo (200 km | 2,900 m)
  • Early departure via Sumdo (Indo-Tibet border check)

  • Reach Kalpa (2,960 m)

Day 8

  • Night stay: Kalpa (better option than Reckong Peo in winter)

  • Activities: Kinner Kailash sunset view, Suicide Point, Roghi Village walk

Kalpa → Shimla (230 km)
  • Morning Kinner Kailash sunrise

  • Sarahan (2,165 m) – Bhimakali Temple (800 yrs, wood carvings, golden spires)

  • Overnight stay in Shimla

  • End of expedition: Drop at Shimla ISBT / Railway Station

  • Pro Tip: Winter Spiti is extreme. Only experienced drivers and properly equipped vehicles should attempt. Carry extra fuel, food, and warm gear. Road can close for 1–3 days due to snowfall anytime.
