Overview
  • Route: Manali → Atal Tunnel → Chandra Taal → Spiti Valley(Kaza)→ High Villages→ Pin Valley →Tabo →Dhankar → Kinnaur → Shimla (800–850 km circuit).

  • Duration: 9 days/8 Nights (flexible pacing; no fixed timings).

  • Best Season: Mid-June to mid-October (Rohtang & Kunzum open; avoid Nov–May snow closure).

  • Vehicle: High-ground-clearance 4x4 (Innova/Scorpio/Tempo Traveller) mandatory beyond Gramphoo.

  • Altitude Profile: 1,950 m (Manali) → Chandra Taal(4300m) → peak 4,550 m (Kunzum) → 2,960 m (Kalpa) → 2,206 m (Shimla).

  • Permits: Rohtang Pass (₹550/car, online), Spiti ILP (free, online for foreigners).

  • Fuel Strategy: Full tank Manali → next reliable at Tandi (370 km gap) → Kaza → Reckong Peo.

  • Acclimatization: Mandatory night in Kaza before 4,200+ m villages; Diamox prophylaxis optional.

  • Network: BSNL best; Airtel/Jio patchy; zero signal in Pin Valley stretches.

  • Stay Style: Mix of hotels (Kaza, Kalpa), homestays (Tabo, Kibber), monastery guesthouses, ​Swiss tents (Chandratal)

Itinerary

Day 1

Manali → Batal → Chandratal Lake (130 km)
  • Depart Manali early via Rohtang Pass (3,978 m, permit check at Gulaba); Optional route Atal Tunnel.

  • Cross Gramphoo → Left for Spiti

  • Pass Chhatru, Batal (3,960 m – last dhaba before Kunzum)

  • Detour 14 km rough track to Chandratal Lake (4,300 m)

  • Camp Stay: Swiss luxury tents with attached washrooms, bonfire

  • Activities: Lake circumambulation (1 hr easy walk), stargazing (zero light pollution), photography

Day 2

Chandra taal → Kaza (90 km)
  • Morning lake reflection photography (best light)

  • Return via Kunzum → Losar (4,076 m – first Spiti village, immigration check)

  • Reach Kaza (3,800 m)

  • Stay: Hotel Spiti Sarai / Deyzor / Sakya Abode (heated rooms, Wi-Fi)

  • Activities: Rest, visit Kaza Monastery (evening prayers), local market

Day 3

Kaza → Ki → Kibber → Gete → Tashigang (60 km loop)
  • Ki Monastery (4,116 m) – Largest in Spiti, perched on hilltop, Tangyud view

  • Kibber Village (4,270 m) – Former highest motorable village, wildlife sanctuary entry, Kibber Monastery

  • Gete Village → Short hike to Tashigang Gompa (small but ancient)

  • Optional: Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary walk (spot ibex, blue sheep)

  • Return to Kaza

  • Stay: Kaza

Day 4

Kaza → Langza → Hikkim → Komic → Chicham → Kaza (60 km loop)
  • Langza (4,400 m) – Giant Buddha statue, marine fossil site (Spiti was ocean bed)

  • Hikkim (4,400 m) – World’s highest post office (send postcard home)

  • Komic (4,520 m) – World’s highest village with motorable road, Tangyud Monastery (Sakya sect)

  • Cross Chicham Bridge (Asia’s highest bridge, 2020)

  • Return to Kaza

  • Stay: Kaza

Day 5

Kaza → Dhankar → Tabo (75 km)
  • Dhankar Gompa (3,894 m) – Dramatic cliff monastery, former Spiti capital, glass chapel

  • Dhankar Lake (optional 1 hr moderate trek, 4,140 m)

  • Continue to Tabo (3,050 m – lowest point in Spiti)

  • Tabo Monastery (996 AD) – “Ajanta of Himalayas”, exquisite murals, meditation caves

  • Stay: Homestay / Tenzin Norling Guest House / Maitreya Regency

Day 6

Tabo → Pin Valley → Gue → Mud → Kaza (120 km)
  • Enter Pin Valley National Park – Cold desert, snow leopard habitat

  • Gue Village → Gue Mummy Stupa (500-yr-old self-mummified Lama in glass case)

  • Mud Village (3,800 m) – Last village of Pin Valley, traditional mud houses, Attargu Gompa

  • Return to Kaza

  • Stay: Kaza (final night)

Day 7

Kaza → Nako → Kalpa (200 km)
  • Early departure via Sumdo (Indo-Tibet border check)

  • Nako Lake (3,625 m) – Sacred, surrounded by willows, short walk

  • Puh-Khab Sangam – Spiti River merges with Satluj

  • Enter Kinnaur via Karcham Dam

  • Reach Kalpa (2,960 m)

  • Activities: Kinner Kailash sunset view, Suicide Point, Roghi Village walk

  • Stay: Hotel Rollingrang / Kinner Retreat / Grand Shangrila (balcony rooms)

Day 8

Kalpa → Sarahan → Narkanda / Rampur (220 km)
  • Morning Kinner Kailash sunrise

  • Sarahan (2,165 m) – Bhimakali Temple (800 yrs, wood carvings, golden spires)

  • Drive via Rampur (apple belt)

  • Narkanda (2,700 m) – Hatu Peak view (optional detour)

  • Stay: Homestay in Narkanda / The Apple Blossom, Fagu

Day 9

Narkanda → Shimla (60 km) + Local + Departure
  • Easy descent to Shimla (2,206 m)

  • Sightseeing: Mall Road, Ridge, Christ Church, Scandal Point, Jakhoo Temple (Hanuman statue)

  • Optional: Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study), Kufri (15 km)

  • Tour Ends: Drop at Shimla ISBT / Railway Station / Airport (IXC Chandigarh 110 km)

  • Onward Options:

  • Kalka Shatabdi (toy train experience)
